Bhubaneswar, Oct 28:
Odisha farmers’ body Nabanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) today announced that more than 1,00,000 farmers from all 30 districts of the state will come together in Bhubaneswar on December 14 to gherao politicians and officers, if the State Government fails to announce a ‘protection allowance’ before December 14.
“We call on the government to take a decision in favour of allocating farmer protection allowance of Rs 21,600 crore for the families of 36 lakh farmers of the state in next budget. The decision should come before December 14. Even though there are several other demands, this is the most important point in our agenda right now. We will go ahead with our demonstrations and gherao all the politicians, ministers, offices and officers on December 14, if the government fails to act on this front,” said NKS Convenor Akshay Kumar addressing the state executive meet of the organisation in Bhubaneswar today.
He further reminded that the organisation has been fighting for price, prestige and pension since long and won’t back down on those demands.
Addressing the gathering, NKS Advisor Soumya Ranjan Patnaik expressed satisfaction over the previous activities taken up by the organisation and advised the attendees to press ahead with the movement in an effective manner.
“We urge the government to fulfil our demands on price, prestige and pension. Besides, they need to address issue such as crop insurance and the bonus announced in Sohela convention. Further, we demand action against the accused involved in corruption in Agriculture Department,” said Patnaik.
It may be noted here that the farmers have long been demanding payment of compensation to the families of farmers that committed suicide, provision of Rs 5,000 pension for farmers, better procurement facilities, higher minimum support price, better social recognition and drought compensation among others.
