Hours before he was scheduled to participate in a farmers’ rally here today, a member of the Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) died in a camp at the Odisha capital this morning.
The deceased farmer identified as Birakishore Biswal, a resident of Barabari village under Salepur area in Cuttack district, had participated in a rally organised by the outfit from Cuttack to the capital city yesterday. After winding up day’s event, he along with several other farmers had put up at a camp near Bhubaneswar-Puri bypass road here last night with other participants.
However, he did not wake up till late in the morning after repeated calls from the fellow mates. Finding him in an unconscious state, the people present there rushed him to Capital Hospital where he was declared dead.
“Birakishore was a good organiser and a farmers’ leader. He had come to participate in the farmers’ demonstration from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar yesterday. After participating in the rally, he shared camp with others. But, he did not wake up today morning. We rushed him to Capital Hospital in an unconscious state. The doctors declared him dead,” NKS state secretary, Akshay Kumar said.
The body was sent for post-mortem to ascertain the reason behind the death.
Notably, the farmers’ body today organised a huge rally at Lower PMG Square to protest over various demands including implementation of pension scheme for farmers, compensation for farmers’ kin who committed suicide, increasing minimum support price of farm produces, better procurement facilities and drought compensation among others.
