Cuttack, Jun 29:
After a manhunt lasting nearly one and a half years, the cyber cell of the Odisha Crime Branch arrested a youth from Mumbai for running a fake website in the name of Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) two days ago, Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma revealed here today.
The arrested youth, identified as Sana-ul-Haq, is a native of Ranchi and was a former student of a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar, Sharma said.
Investigation has revealed the involvement of at least one more person in the case, he said.
Haq was arrested from Mumbai, where he was working in a private company, on Saturday, he said adding he has now been sent to the Choudwar jail after his bail was rejected by the court.
“Last year, a case was lodged by OJEE authorities about a fake website encouraging students to apply for admission. During investigation, we found that the website was being run by a youth now based in Mumbai. We arrested him two days back and brought him here after completing the required remand formalities at the appropriate Mumbai court,” the ADG said.
Technical evidence gathered during the probe have confirmed that the website was designed and hosted by Haq, a student of computer science, Sharma said.
He said Haq’s services had been requisitioned by some private engineering colleges to build up a database of prospective students who can then be approached for admission, Sharma said.
The Crime Branch had begun a probe into the incident after the OJEE authorities lodged a complaint with the Airfield Police Station in this regard on January 16, 2014.
OJEE secretary Priyabrat Sahu advised students not to respond to any site other than the two official websites of OJEE: ojee.nic.in and odishajee.com
