Extortionists posing as Pak terrorists held in Odisha

Cuttack: A team of Chhattisgarh and Odisha police today busted an extortion module here with arrest of three persons.

The trio – including the mastermind – was arrested from Markat Nagar area, police said.

“Dheeraj Rao, Swapnajit Pradhan and Janmajay Das have been arrested from Markat Nagar for their involvement in extortion racket. They were using SIM boxes to make calls to their targets. They identified themselves to be members of a Pakistan-based terror outfit,” Cuttack DCP, Akhileshvar Singh informed media.

While the kingpin of the racket identified as Dheeraj Rao hails from Bihar, the other two from Odisha work in a private nursing home here.

Police have seized SIM boxes, 104 ATM cards and other incriminating things from the spot.

Notably, this is the second such incident in the state in just over a month’s time. A team from Mumbai police had arrested four persons from Berhampur for operating SIM boxes and having links with underworld don Chhota Rajan.
