Bhubaneswar, Jul 1:

Ahead of the launch of full Wi-Fi service in Odisha’s capital city, the Wi-Fi Proof of Concept (PoC) project, aimed at testing the efficacy of the system, will become operational from July 15, said a senior official of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Bhubaneswar.

Six telecom operators – Airtel, Bharti Infratel, Reliance Jio, Orange Softech, Ortel and Vodafone – selected for PoC project will conduct Wi-Fi PoC in specific zones in Bhubaneswar Municipal area.

“Bhubaneswar Municipal area has been divided into 10 zones and the six operators have been given specific zones to conduct Wi-Fi PoC. The PoC will be operational by July 15 and then it would be opened up for public experience for a month,” said the official

The Wi-Fi access will be free for the users for 30 minutes each day and can be accessed by them via mobile, laptops or other hand-held devices. The feedback gained will help in making modifications and fixing glitches while working on the final architecture of the city Wi-Fi project.

Reliability & robustness; compatibility of overall eco-system; cost effectiveness; timeliness; customer feedback; best of the breed technology; reporting, regulatory and security compliance; legal interception; leveraging existing infrastructure; user friendliness and meeting Bhubaneswar city expectations  are the parameters the PoC will focus on.

As per scope of work, the operator will design, build, operate and manage Wi-Fi services during the PoC period of four weeks, at one of the ten locations, STPI sources said.

The locations are Utkal university campus and Sahid Nagar; Market building, Secretariat and IG Park; Biju Patnaik College Road, Pal Heights and May Fair; Forest Park Area, Biju Pattnaik Park and Airport; KIIT University, Infocity and Damana; Lingraj Temple area; Surya Nagar, Governor house and OUAT; Nandan Kannan and Botanical Garden; Khandagiri, Jagamara and ITER; and Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Master Canteen and Ashok Nagar.

The operators will be required to provide high-speed Internet services (minimum 512 Kbps) with wireless network at their own cost.

After completion of public scrutiny, the complete feedback will be incorporated for preparing Request For Proposal (RFP) for Bhubaneswar City Wi-Fi, STPI sources said.

Notably, the state government has entrusted STPI for Bhubaneswar City Wi-Fi project and it is the nodal agency for City Wi-Fi project.
