Students opting to study law have a wide range of exciting career options before them as the legal profession had encompassed virtually every field of activity, Judge of the Odisha High Court, Justice Indrajit Mohanty said on Wednesday.

“Today there is no area where lawyers are not required. Anything you do needs the compliance of law,” he said while addressing the orientation program organized for the new batch of law students at the SOA University.

There are many choices including academics which can be a fantastic career option for the law student, he said while stating that the reason behind a student joining the course in law was important.

“It is not necessary that you should be from a family of lawyers. First generation lawyers are doing very well,” Justice Mohanty said.

He urged the students of law to challenge themselves and strive to acquire as much knowledge as they could because the profession of law was a passion.

“As young people, you have fresh minds and don’t have preconceived ideas,” he said adding they could help people who were less privileged and find out whether the law was coming to their aid or not.

In his address, Manas Ranjan Mohapatra, chairman of the Odisha State Bar Council, wanted to know from the students as to whether their decision to study law was their own or was imposed on them by others. He said they would have to be labour hard, be patient and energetic to be good legal practitioners.

He said that though around 50,000 lawyers had enrolled themselves as legal practitioners in the state, hardly 20,000 of them were active in the field.

Among others, Prof RP Mohanty, vice-chancellor of the University and Prof Jayadev Pati, dean of the SOA National Institute of Law, the faculty of legal studies of the University, also spoke.
