Bhubaneswar, Nov 27:
The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Odisha Crime Branch police today arrested an officer of the State Bank of India in connection with a loan fraud.
Surendra Senapati, the then branch manager of SBI Sakhigopal branch, was arrested for his involvement in a loan fraud amounting to Rs1.17 crore, said EOW sources.
Loans amounting to Rs 1.17 crore were disbursed from the SBI Sakhigopal branch to 51 fictitious Railway employees on the basis of forged documents during his tenure as the branch manager there.
Senapati had sanctioned the loans between 2003 and 2006 without verifying the salary certificates and undertakings from the DDOs showing the 51 beneficiaries as employees of East Coast Railways, EOW sources said.
Doubts about the loan accounts were raised when the loanees consistently defaulted on payment and the matter was reported to the EOW by SBI’s Regional office here.
