Bhubaneswar, Oct 16:
Former Odisha minister and BJD Rajya Sabha member AU Singhdeo has proposed to the Centre capacity expansion at Badmal Ordnance Factory in Odisha’s Bolangir district for Pinaka rocket production.
In a letter to Defence minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday, Singhdeo said the while the Centre had sanctioned enhancement of production of of Pinaka rockets from 1,000 to 5,000 per year, the requirement of the Indian Army would go up to 12,000 rockets per year after its successful evaluation of the two new variants of Pinaka and Smerch rockets.
Stating that the primary considerations that decide the location of facilities is the availability of land, he proposed to the Defence minister to carry out the capacity expansion in Badmal Ordnance Factory where about 5000 acres out of a total of 12,2000 acres of land of the factory is lying unused.
“As the capacity expansion would take place in one premises, this would eliminate duplication of facilities and consequently reduce costs,” Singhdeo added.
The BJD leader also said that apart from the Ordnance Factory at Badmal, the Centre has no worthwhile investment in Bolangir, one of the most backward districts in the country.
“Considering the above, I request your intervention to ensure implementation of these new projects at Badmal that would go a long way in addressing poverty and unemployment in the district”, he pointed out.
