Ex-Odisha CM Giridhar Gamang and son formally join BJP

Former Odisha Chief Minister and Congress leader Giridhar Gamang and his son Shishir Gamang along with some of his supporters today formally joined the BJP here at the party’s state headquarters in the presence of party’s Organisational Secretary Ramlal, two Central ministers Jual Oram and Dharmendra Pradhan, party state president K V Singhdeo and other senior leaders.

Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Ramlal, union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, state BJP chief K.V. Singhdeo and in charge of the party’s state affairs Arun Singh welcomed the veteran tribal leader into the BJP fold.

“I formally joined the BJP today (Thursday). I don’t desire any post in the new party and will not request the national leadership for any portfolio in the cabinet. But I will certainly accept whatever (responsibility) the party will assign me,” Gamang told IANS.

The nine-time Congress MP from Koraput quit the party last month after accusing it of “humiliating” him. He met BJP national president Amit Shah in New Delhi on June 12.

The veteran tribal leader was earlier associated with the Congress for nearly 43 years.

He shot to fame when his single vote led to the defeat of the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government during the confidence motion in parliament in 1999.

The state BJP, after its massive membership drive, is all out to take forward its ‘maha sampark abhijan’. The party will make attempts to reach out to each registered party members in the state. That apart, the party will plan agitations against the failures of the BJD government in the state while enlightening people on the successes/achievements of the one year old Modi government at the Centre.

To prepare a road map on this account, the party is holding an important meeting. All candidates of the party, who had contested in the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, and state functionaries are participating in the meeting.

Apart from senior Gamang and his son Nagraj Dora and Rabindra Mohapatra also joined the BJP today. They were all welcomed into the party by organizational secretary Ramlal.

Earlier, Singhdeo informed the media that it will adopt a resolution condemning breaking of tradition and disturbances during the Nabakalebara rituals of the Lords. He said the BJP will take up the three issues of electricity, water and law and go to the streets.

The meeting which is underway will prepare a road map for the purpose.
