Bhubaneswar, Sep 24:
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) today declared former MLA Abhimanyu Behera as the Congress candidate for the by-election of Kandhamal parliamentary seat in Odisha to be held on October 15.
The AICC gave preference to Behera since he is a local candidate and has influence in the area, said Congress sources.
Earlier, the ruling BJD had named Pratyusha Rajeswari, widow of Hemendra Chandra Singh, as the BJD candidate for the seat while BJP has fielded former Kandhamal MP Rudra Madhav Ray.
All the three political parties are trying hard to win in the by-elections.
The Parliamentary constituency consists of seven Assembly segments – Phulbani (ST), G.Udaygiri (ST), Balliguda (ST), Boudh, Bhanjanagar, Daspalla and Kantamal.
