Jagatsinghpur, May 11:
The district administration handed over ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh to each of the families of the five victims including four girls who died in a boat mishap at Biluakhai river near Nachhipur village in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Friday evening.
The amount was released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), sources said.
The bodies of the four girls were consigned to flames on Saturday evening at the village. The district collector SK Mallick provided Rs 10,000 from the Red Cross fund to their families to perform the last rites.
The country boat, which capsized in the Biluakhai river, was carrying more than 30 passengers against a capacity of 15.
The accident occurred when about 30 villagers, most of them women and teenaged girls, were returning after attending a religious function held in Sidheswar temple in the Baisimouza area.
The overburdened country boat capsized in the middle of the river.
Most of the passengers who jumped out of the boat were unable to swim as they got trapped in the weeds that abound in that stretch of the river.
Local people, however, managed to rescue them barring five , including four girls, who drowned before help could reach them.
