The Joint Eviction Team consisting of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and General Administration department of the Odisha government today carried out an eviction drive of unauthorised encroachments from Jjayadev Vihar Square to Vani Vihar Square for laying of sewerage line and for expansion of N.H.-5 as per requisition from National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
In the eviction drive that started from Jayadev Vihar Square. about 25-30 street vendors, 11 temporary garages, 10-15 cabins and one religious structure (Mangala Temple by the side gate of OCAC office were demolished by the eviction squad.
The eviction squad was able to clear encroached structures by the side of the NH 5 stretching nearly 2 km. However, the squad could not evict some encroachers about 400 metres before Vani Vihar Square due to heavy protest by slum dwellers living on the road side adjacent to the boundary wall of Utkal University Campus, said BDA liasion officer SS Mohanty.
One OMFED booth too could not evicted due to a status quo order of the Odisha High Court. NHAI had setn a requisition to City Enforcement Monitoring Committee (CEMC) headed by BDA Vice-Chairman Krishan Kumar requesting it to remove unauthorised encroachments from the said locations, Mohanty added.
The demolition drive was conducted by Enforcement Officer, BDA, Debaprasad Dash, Asst. Commissioner (Recovery), BMC, representative of GA.
Zonal ACP , IIC, Sahid Nagar, two platoons of gents APR Force and one section of Lady APR force were also present at site to maintain law and order during the demolition drive.
The eviction drive was interrupted for some time due to some resistance created by some slum dwellers.
