Bhubaneswar, Apr 2:

Commissionerate Police on Wednesday detained two city-based engineering college students in connection with the murder of their hostel mate this evening for interrogation.

The detained students were identified as Sujit Kumar Khuntia and Suryakant Das, both from Jajpur district pursuing their BTech degree at Nilachal Polytechnic College here in Patia.

According to Chandrasekhapur police, Saroj Kumar Sahu (24) of Keonjhar, a third year student of Rajdhani Engineering College in Mancheswar, who was murdered today, had been staying with Sujit in a hostel located at Kanakdurga Nagar in Patia. There was a longstanding conflict between Saroj and his hostel mates over the frequent visit by  the former’s girl friend to the hostel. Sujit had complained to the owner of the hostel about this and that had led to a fight between them over the issue.

Sources said there was a heated argument this evening between  Saroj and Sujit who had also brought his friend Suryakant along for a confrontation. It is alleged that during the heated exchange, Sujit hit Saroj with a wooden stick on his head following which Saroj collapsed on the ground with serious bleeding injury.

While Sujit and his two associates reportedly fled the spot, some local people alerted the Chandrasekharpur police.

Saroj’s body was first taken to Kalinga hospital, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

Later the police took the body to Capital hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, during investigation the police have recovered a blood stained wooden stick and a bike from the spot. They have detained Sujit and Suryakant for interrogation in this connection.
