Elephant tramples 70-year old woman to death

In a tragic incident, a 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant on the foothills of Similipal forests in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today. Another 80-year-old woman has also been seriously injured in the attack
Two women – Pana Murmu (70) and Sumi Hansda (80)- were standing outside their house in Babanagala village under Baripada forest division when they were attacked by a jumbo roaming in the area, said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Baripada, Sanjay Swain.
He said the injured women were taken to the sub-divisional headquarters hospital at Udala where Pana was declared dead. Sumi is struggling for her life, he said.
Two female elephants from the Similipal forests that had strayed into the nearby Jualia village on Saturday. One of them was spotted roaming in the area apparently after getting separated today, the DFO said.
DFO Swain said efforts are on to chase the elephant into the woods with the help of forest personnel and local people.
