Khordha: Inmates of ‘Asha Kiran Home’ in Jatni in Odisha’s Khordha district have been shifted elsewhere following orders from the Collector.
The Collector ordered for shifting of the inmates after a video depicting ‘Asha Kiran Home’ supervisor subjecting its inmates to torture went viral in the morning today.
The Collector has also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
As many as 12 mentally ill persons and 11 old men and women totaling 23 used to stay in ‘Asha Kiran Home’.
Allegedly, these inmates were subjected to torture and were not even being provided with food regularly.
“Asha Kiran Home had 23 inmates. Out of them 12, who are mentally ill have been shifted to Mission Ashram. The remaining 11, who are elderly persons have been shifted to two ashrams in Khordha district. These persons have been shifted following orders from the Collector,” informed Khordha Block Welfare Extension Officer Biplab Keshari Samantaray.
The video shows Hemant Shastri, the supervisor of ‘Asha Kiran Home’, a multi-service centre for distressed people hitting an elderly inmate with pliers in an inhuman manner.
Namita Pal, a local social worker lodged a complaint with the Collector after watching the video today following which the Collector ordered for the shifting of the inmates.
On the other hand, Asha Kiran Home’s supervisor Hemant Shastri has denied the allegations made against him and pleaded ignorance about the video.
“I haven’t beaten any of the inmates. I have no knowledge of any video going viral. I have no idea why such allegations are being levelled against me,” said Shastri.
