Elderly man misbehaved in police station in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: The eye catching slogan of Commissionerate police ‘We Care – We Dare’ appears to be confined in punch line here where the department has forgotten basic courtesy and civic sense to show sympathy to elderly people and senior citizens at the police stations.

The duty of Commissionerate police towards civilians was put in the dock after a 93-year-old man, who had visited the Capital Police station for lodging a complaint against a person for attacking his wife and looting money, was behaved badly and driven out of the police station on Friday.

A helpless old man, who is at the dawn of his life, waited for hours in the police station to lodge a complaint, but he was shown the exit door without receiving his hearing his words. He returned his home with disappointment deciding to sit on dharna in front of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence Naveen Niwas.

Following the incident, Police Commissioner YB Khurania directed an ACP to probe the matter. Acting on the order by the senior official, the police visited the old man’s home and have started search operation to nab the man accused of assaulting and snatching money from his wife.

According to reports, the 93-year-old Hrusikesh Mohanty lives in a slum with his wife Kamala at Bapuji Nagar area. The poor old couple has no source of income. They beg people for survival.

Mohanty alleged a neighbour belonging to Bihar of taking away their money. He had been complaining about it in the police station many a time, but police pay no attention to his complaint.

On Thursday night, the accused entered Mohanty’s home in his absence and looted Rs 500 after assaulting his wife. The old man rushed the Capital Police station at around 9 am on Friday to lodge a complaint against the youth. He waited for 5 pm at the police station but his complaint was received, rather he was misbehaved and asked to get out of the police station.

The entire incident took place at the police station while DCP Satyabrata Bhoi was addressing the media about exposure of a looters’ gang in the city.

However the police official in their defence said that Mohanty was given food at the police station, but they were unaware when he left the place.

On the other hand, Police Commissioner termed the incident as ‘unfortunate’.

Khurania said that the matter has been handed over to a officer in rank of ACP. If any police official was found to have misbehaved the old man, strong action will be taken against him.
