New Delhi, Oct 12 :
Investigators have found that rivalry between two drug trafficking gangs was behind Saturday’s firing at two Delhi Police constables in Connaught Place market, police said Sunday.
Police said the man who was arrested after the firing has been identified as Rizwan alias Irfan, a drug supplier from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh.
He supplied drugs in Moradabad and had come to Delhi to kill a Delhi-based kingpin of a drug supplier gang.
Rizwan and his two accomplices were loitering near Shankar Market in Connaught Place Saturday when constables Prateek and Sandeep tried to confront them after noticing their suspicious movements.
Realising they would be caught, one of the accused fired at the constables.
“Though four rounds were fired at constables Prateek and Sandeep, nobody was injured,” said a senior police official.
The constables apprehended Rizwan while his associates managed to escape.
Locals also roughed up Rizwan before he was taken into custody.
The official said: “We are interrogating the accused and efforts are on to nab his accomplices.”
However, police officials remained tight-lipped when asked about the involvement of any terror link in the firing.
