Bhubaneswar, Jun 21:
In a shocking incident, a doctor of Capital Hospital in the Odisha capital slapped the husband of a patient for his inability to pay the doctor Rs 8000 bribe.
Narrating the incident to Sambad, the poor man said he is yet to lodge a complaint against the doctor lest the treatment of his wife would be further neglected.
On the other hand, hospital authorities, following the report published in the media, have visited the patient and her husband and discussed about the incident.
“We have investigated into the incident and have submitted the report to the Health Department,” said Director of the hospital Biswa Bhusan Patnaik. He, however, declined to reveal the details mentioned in the report.
It may be noted that the patient was brought to Capital Hospital on June 14 after she was bitten by a snake. She was referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as there was no available bed for the patient in the ICU.
The private hospital agents roaming around in Capital Hospital poached the poor man and got his wife admitted to a private hospital here.
Unable to afford the treatment fees, he had to sell his livestock and utensils to arrange some money. But that was not enough to pay the bills of the private hospital, following which he was asked to go back to capital hospital again after a few days of treatment.
The doctor in the Capital Hospital demanded Rs 8000 to treat the patient to which Madhusudan expressed his inability to pay anymore.
On the day of incident, he was sent to buy some medicine. The man had to walk few kilometers to the nearby shop, as the medicine was not available in the shops in hospital campus.
This enraged the doctor who slapped him and threatened him to not disclose the incident to anyone.
The incident came to fore after some volunteers working in the hospital saw the man crying helplessly.
