Angul: In another instance of police atrocity on the civilians in name of duty, a doctor suffered head injuries after a police allegedly beat up him during helmet check here this morning in Angul town.
The victim identified as Dr Kamalakant Jena was stopped by a cop at Angul police station square and beaten up for not wearing helmet. The injured doctor was rushed to the district headquarters hospital where he is posted currently.
According to reports, Dr Jena, who was in hurry to attend to patients at the district headquarters hospital on Sunday morning, became the victim of police fury when the cop found him without helmet. Another doctor near the hospital rescued him from the police.
“I admit that I had committed mistake for not wearing helmet while riding the vehicle on the road. But, it does not mean that the cop will assault and hurt physically,” said the injured doctor.
“When I was stopped on the road during helmet check, I went to the cops and paid Rs 100 as fine for not wearing helmet. However, the cop talked roughly with slur words. He snatched my gold chain from neck and started beating me with stick without mercy,” Dr Jena alleged.
He said that he will file an FIR demanding strong action against the police, who assaulted him on the pretext of duty.
