Bhubaneswar, Sep 30:

A 19-year old young girl today sought the intervention of the State Commission for Women (SCW) against police inaction over her allegation of sexual exploitation against a man.

In her petition presented to the SCW here today, the girl, a native of Khariapalli village under Ranapur police limits in Nayagarh district, stated that Sarat Kumar Bastia (24), a constable in SOG 3rd battalion in Malkangiri, of the same village had developed a relationship with her which later turned into physical relationship.

“On June 14, 2013 Sarat, a distant relative, had come to our home at 10 pm. Taking advantage of the absence of family members, he persuaded me to have sex after promising to marry me. After a month, when I realised that I am pregnant, I contacted him and requested him to marry me without delay. But he sent some medicines for abortion through his brother instead,” said the victim in her petition.

“After my parents came know about it, they took up the matter with the panchayat wherein it was decided that Sarat will marry me. But he ignored the decision and threatened me of dire consequences,” added the victim.

The victim later lodged a complaint with the Ranapur police on August 20, 2013, but the police registered the case only on September 10.

Instead of taking action against the culprit, the police had been pressurising her to settle the case mutually, she rued, urging the Commission for immediate intervention in the matter.
