Brahmapur, Jan 10:
Diarrhoea has hit four villages spread over in three blocks of Ganjam district with more than 50 persons afflicted with the disease, according to official sources.
Sources said Patrapur and Talapada under Patrapur block, Khemundikhola in Sanakhemundi and Ranigaon under Purushottampur block have been affected by the water borne disease.
According to CDMO in-charge Ganjam Dr L K Rath, mobile medical units have been sent to the affected villages and patients have been shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. He said their condition was stable and no fresh cases have been reported.
Dr Rath said the cause of death of a 62 year old woman Bhanu Behera of Patrapur was being verified to ascertain if it was due to diarrhoea.
Saying consumption of contaminated water was the main reason for the outbreak of the disease, Dr Rath said the villagers in and around the affected villages have been advised to drink boiled water.
Disinfection of water bodies in the affected villages has also been taken up, Dr Rath informed.
