A two-member Inquiry Committee consisting of Hemlata Kheria and Manasi Pradhan of the National Commission for Women (NCW) visited Chandan lodge here on Tuesday to inquire into the rape of a deaf and dumb girl by her instructor Dhiraj Kumar Srivastava, a radio and TV instructor at the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) in Pokhariput area in the city on August 6. The accused was arrested from this lodge.
Earlier, the NCW members visited the Mahila police station here and examined the FIR copy of the victim and discussed the action taken by the investigating officer to give justice to the victim.
The members expressed unhappiness over the police inaction against the lodge. “I’m asking the police why they didn’t take action against the lodge though they knew the accused had done illegal activities there,” said NCW member Kheria.
Notably, Srivastava was arrested on August 10 evening from the lodge following allegations that he had raped a deaf and dumb student on August 6 at a time when she was suffering from fever.
According to the FIR, after she complained of fever, the accused, instead of taking her to a doctor, took her to his house and raped her three times there.
The 20-year old victim of Indapahi village in Mayurbhanj districtfiled an FIR with the local Mahila police station after she was encouraged by a friend and an activist to take Srivastava to task for taking advantage of her disability and trust.
