Bhubaneswar, Jun 6:
Customers of BSNL in Odisha had to endure dropped calls and network congestion throughout the day yesterday because of a damaged fibre coat between Kharagpur and Kolkata.
Those who have opted for BSNL’s broadband service also had a harrowing time as internet connection was down for the better part of the day.
Even though BSNL provided signal from a standby network, it was nowhere near the requirement. To add to the trouble, the standby network itself went down after 5 PM. Another network was roped in by BSNL, but the congestion was far from over.
The situation improved only after 8 PM after BSNL techies somehow managed to fix the problem.
“BSNL network of Odisha is by and large dependent on the Kolkata fibre coat. We experience problems in managing the network, if the coat gets damaged there. Unfortunately, it gets damaged quite often. Not only Odisha, but yesterday’s damage affected customers in neighbouring Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal partially,” said a senior officer of BSNL.
The issues with BSNL network, anyway, are never-ending. As if congestion and call drops are not enough, static on the line makes the call experience worse on the network. Not only does it happen in intra-network calls, but also when a BSNL number is dialled from a different network.
The officer, however, was quick to point out the statics issues to the fibre coat problem and assured of a solution soon.
“We are trying to set up a system in Cuttack that would transmit signal for customers of Odisha and have already procured the equipment for this project. It will go on stream in another 2-3 months. I hope this will be a permanent solution for our Odisha customers and help retain those that are turning their backs from our network,” he added.
