A gang of dacoits looted valuables from the house of a journalist in Odisha’s Baleswar town in the late night hours on Saturday.

Robbery at knifepointIn a complaint lodged with the Town police station, Satyasiv Das, a local journalist, said a gang of dacoits barged into his house at about 1.30 AM by jumping over the front gate.

“Later, the dacoits broke open the main door of the house and beat up my mother and niece and asked me to hand over the locker key while brandishing a sharp weapon. After I gave them all ornaments and cash, they tied us up with a rope and fled the area with my Honda Accent car and my mobile phone at about 2.15 AM”, Das said.

“As soon as the dacoits left the area, I managed to untie myself and came out of the house and called up to my neighbours who rushed to my help and informed the police,” he informed.

Informing the media, Baleswar SP Niti Sekhar said the dacoits have looted ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh, cash worth Rs 35,000 and the car of Das.

“We have traced the car of Das near Sergarh on National Highway-5 from where the dacoits might have fled in another vehicle. We have launched a manhunt to nab the dacoits by sealing all entry and exit points in the town”, the SP added.
