Odagan (Nayagarh), June 5:
In a daring daylight robbery, a three-member dacoit gang looted cash worth over Rs 12 lakh from the UCO Bank branch at Nandighore under Odagan block in Odisha’s Nayagarh district this afternoon.
According to reports, three youths on a bike arrived at the bank at 12.47 PM and barged into the bank and attacked the manager Padma Charan Machhua with a stick and asked five bank staff and six customers to sit in one corner of the office.
After collecting Rs 3 lakh from the cash counter, they collected the key from the manager by brandishing a sword and proceeded to loot cash worth Rs 9,47,154 from the bank’s locker. The trio later sped away towards Nayagarh, eyewitnesses said.
Following information, a team of Odagan police rushed to the bank for an on-the-spot investigation. Later, Nayagarh SP Bhagyadhar Behera, accompanied by a scientific team and the security officer of UCO Bank’s Bhubaneswar branch, arrived at the bank.
Police have launched a manhunt to nab the dacoits, the SP said, adding that the miscreants took the opportunity of the absence of a security guard in the bank.
Prior to this incident, a major bank loot had taken place at the Odisha Gramya Bank Darpanarayanpur branch under Sarankul police station limits in the district on December 31 last year in which the dacoits looted 688 packets of mortgaged gold worth over Rs 4 crore.
