The second edition of the Bhubaneswar Cyclothon got an overwhelming response as people from various walks of life regardless of their age participated in the event held in Odisha capital today.

The event was organized to create awareness on healthy heart on the eve of World Heart Day which is observed on September 29.

The cycle rally was flagged off from Sikharchandi Square in the city at about 6:30 AM and reached Kalinga Stadium via Jaydev Vihar. The 12 kilometre long distance was covered in about an hour. Hundreds of cyclists across age groups participated in the annual event.

Sports and Youth Services Minister Sudam Marandi, Twin City Police Commissioner YB Khurania, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi, renowned heart specialist Mahendra Tripathy, former cricketer Debasish Mohanty, former women’s football captain Shradhanjali Samantaray, Olympian Dutee Chand, athlete Amiya Mallick, mountaineer Ganesh Jena, chess grandmaster Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Ollywood actor Archita Sahu, actor Sabyasachi Mishra, singer Ira Mohanty graced the occasion.

Event sponsor and ‘All That Jazz’ MD Samsher Singh Hura and Sambad editor Soumya Ranjan Patnaik were present on the occasion to encourage the participants.

What they said:

“This is a welcome initiative. Cycling keeps our body fit. We need to exercise in any form so as to keep our organs healthy,” Sports and Youth Services Minister Sudam Marandi said.

“Without a healthy heart, we cannot perform anything. Apart from the heart being healthy, it should also be clear. We should shun negativity and promote brotherhood,” editor of Odisha’s leading vernacular daily Soumya Ranjan Patnaik said.

“We have a dedicated cycle track in the city which is being increasingly used by youngsters. It is not only good for health, it is also environment-friendly,” Police Commissioner YB Khurania said.

“We can easily avoid heart diseases if we exercise regularly and cycling is the best exercise,” actor Sabyasachi Mishra expressed.

“I would advise all to prefer cycle over car and bike in view of the increasing fuel prices. If you are travelling two-three kilometers, then take a cycle ride instead of motorized vehicles,” Ollywood actor Archita Sahu opined.

Notably, World Heart Day is observed specifically to spread awareness about the four main factors that affect the human heart – use of tobacco, improper diet, lack of physical exercise and excess consumption of alcohol.
