Bhubaneswar, Nov 29:

The Odisha government today announced setting up an open university in Odisha’s Sambalpur city.

Announcing this in the State Assembly, Higher Education minister Pradip Panigrahi said that the proposed university would to be the first of its kind in the state.

The state government has already made provision of Rs 35 crore for establishment and infrastructure of the proposed Open University, he added.

Apart from contributing to the progress of higher education, the university would facilitate distance education, continuous training and research for students and teachers, and help a large number of students, drop-outs and provide need-based quality education in the backward and tribal-dominated districts of the state, the minister told the House.

He said the decision of the state government to set up the proposed Open University at Sambalpur was aimed at removing regional imbalance in the state.
It may be mentioned that the people of western Odisha, particularly the residents of Sambalpur, had intensified their agitation demanding establishment of the proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in their region after the state government decided to locate the proposed IIM in Bhubaneswar.
