Rayagada, June 10:
A CRPF jawan today committed suicide by shooting himself in Odisha’s Rayagada district, reports said.
The deceased CRPF jawan identified as Chandrakant Pawar shot him dead with his service rifle in Raybiji CRPF camp under Chandrapur block in Rayagada district, reports said.
“Pawar was a native of Maharasatra and was engaged in anti-Maoist operations. He was under depression for some reasons for the past few days,” a senior police officer said.
Reasons behind Pawar taking the extreme step were not known immediately. It is not clear, if it has anything to do with family dispute or depression.
However, observers said, long stretches of deployment of security forces in anti- Maoist operations in the most difficult terrains without the opportunity to visit their families have often led to severe mental stress among the personnel, and even suicidal tendencies.
A CRPF jawan had earlier committed suicide by shooting himself with his service gun in the state’s Kandhamal district in last January.
