Bhubaneswar, June 21:
Office bearers and workers of Bhubaneswar Zonal Committee (BZC) of Communist Party of India (CPI) today staged a demonstration at Bhubaneswar Railway station to protest the 14.2% hike in rail fares for passengers and 6.5% hike freight charges.
Holding party flags, placards and shouting slogans, hundreds of party workers blocked the railway track disrupting the rail service for half-an-hour.
Rajdhani Express and a couple of other trains were delayed due to the protest.
The CPI leaders slammed the Central Government’s decision and said it will hit the common man’s pockets very badly.
Sura Jena, CPI zonal secretary said this was Narendra Modi’s ‘gift’ to the common man after getting an thumping victory in the elections. Modi had all along promised that his government will protect the interest of the common man but the hike has proved that he had been making fake promises to the people.
The railway ministry increased not just the passenger fares but also levied freight charges with effect from Friday, even before the Rail Budget is presented in the Parliament, which is grossly unfair, Jena said.
He said his party demanded an immediate roll back of the ‘anti-people’ decision .
