Cops lathi charge teaching aspirants in Odisha capital


Bhubaneswar: Police today resorted to lathi charge to disperse around 400 Sikshya Sahayak job aspirants from lower PMG square here who allegedly attacked the police by pelting stones and bottles at them.

According to reports, at least 10 agitators have been injured in the lathi charge and over 20 have been taken into custody by the police.

Capital Police Station IIC Manas Garnaik and few other police officers have been injured in the stone pelting by the agitators.

Garnaik has sustained injuries on his head after he was hit by a stone hurled at him by the agitators.

Violence broke out when some from among the agitators hurled bottles and stones at the police while their representatives had gone to meet School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra to discuss their demands.

“While their leaders had gone to hold discussions they suddenly turned violent and pelted stones. In the incident Capital PS IIC and some other police officers have sustained injuries. After that, we chased them off. They again came back for the second time and resorted to blocking of the road. They have been chased off. Now the situation is under control and we are keeping an eye on it,” said DCP Satyabrata Bhoi.

“By this time recruitment would have been over but it was stalled as the matter was in the court. The court in its verdict now has ruled to also give an opportunity to those securing 45%. A fresh advertisement will be published and those who will be selected will be recruited,” stated School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra in his reaction to the agitation by job aspirants.

Notably, unemployed CT and B.Ed qualified youths under the banner of Sikshya Sahayak Ashayi Sangha, Odisha were on a dharna at the lower PMG square demanding appointment as Sikshya Sahayaks.
