Police have detained two persons—Jiban Samantaray and Panchanan Das—for questioning for their alleged involvement in the shootout behind the AIIMS Hospital in Patrapada area under Khandagiri police station limits.

The shootout is believed to be a fall-out of a dispute over a contract for construction of a housing project in the area. Prime accused Rajendra Barik pumped one bullet into the chest of the deceased—Dillip Nayak—at the construction site, police sources said.

Informed sources said Rajendra, who was awarded the construction contract, later sub-leased the work to one Sambhu due to issues over delay in payments. The latter had employed the deceased a few months ago.

The brawl between Rajendra and Dillip took a violent turn this morning over construction materials. In a fit of rage, Rajendra allegedly shot Dillip dead at the site and fled the spot along with over 25 of his associates.

Meanwhile, Dillip’s family members accused Rajendra of committing the crime.

“My brother left the house saying that he was going to meet Rajendra at the construction site. Later, we came to know that he was killed. We strongly suspect the involvement of Rajendra in the murder,” alleged Sanjay Nayak, brother of the deceased.

Police said that around 25 people of Barik’s gang were present at the construction site when Dillip Nayak reached there.

“Before Dillip reached the site, 10 of his associates were waiting for him along with over 25 supporters of Rajendra. As soon as Dillip reached the spot, both the groups had a heated argument which resulted in a scuffle. Rajendra’s group overpowered Dillip’s associates who fled the spot. Finding Dillip fighting a lone battle, his rivals shot him dead,” a police official of Khandagiri police station said.
