Burla (Sambalpur), July 22:
A three-member team of the Central Water and Power Consultancy Services from New Delhi Delhi today visited the Hirakud dam at Burla in Odisha’s Sambalpur district to examine the leakage in the dam’s powerhouse gallery.
“The team would work as per the recommendation of the four-member team of National Committee on Dam Safety (NCDS) that visited the powerhouse last month,” SN Das, head of Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) unit, told reporters here.
It may be mentioned that the NCDS team, comprising Er AD Mohile, chairman, NCDS, member Suresh Chandra, PK Mohanty, chief engineer, Odisha Dam Safety and deputy director Er AK Das, had examined the leakage during its visit to the dam on June 16.
Prior to the visit of the NCDS team, a five-member team of the Odisha Dam Safety organisation had visited the dam on June 4 to study the leakage in the unit 6 and 7 of the powerhouse gallery that were built in 1956 and 1989-90 respectively.
The team, in its report to the state government, had claimed that the leakage will pose no threat to the main dam.
It may be recalled the leakage was detected during the annual supervision in March this year.
Later, the dam authorities informed the matter to the state government to take adequate steps.
