Cuttack, Oct 26:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Odisha Police to submit a detailed status report relating to the action taken on all the FIRs filed in connection with the police lathi-charge on Congress workers during a party rally in Bhubaneswar in September last year.
The Commission, in response to an application filed by Odisha High Court lawyer Nishikant Mishra, had earlier asked the State DGP to file a counter in response to the application.
However, on behalf of the DGP, the Bhubaneswar DCP had filed the counter.
The petitioner, in his application had urged the Commission to direct the state government to pay a damage of Rs 50,000 each to all those who were injured in the police lathi charge.
Expressing concern over the false cases registered against some innocent persons by the police in this connection, he had urged the Commission to take action against the erring police officers.
“The NHRC has rejected the DCP report on the issue and in a fresh directive, the Commission has asked the State Police to file a status report on it again,” Mishra said.
