Bhubaneswar, Feb 17:

Alleging that police have registered false cases against as many as 726 persons by branding them Maoists over the last 14 years of BJD government rule, Congress MP from Nabarangpur Pradeep Majhi today said that the party would hold a two-hour dharna in front of police stations in Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts against the police atrocities on tribals and dalits on Tuesday.PRESS MEET OF THE PRADEEP MAJHI (MP, NABARANGPUR)

Congress leaders Majhi and Taraprasad Bahinipati and 8 others including family members of the missing tribals are on indefinite hunger strike in front of Raj Bhawan since February 14 demanding information from the state government on five tribal people who have gone missing after police took them in custody .

Two of them, Ranjan Kumar Routray of Mahakalpara and Manoj Sahu were hospitalised today after their condition deteriorated.

“The family members of these young people are alleging that they were killed by the police and we want to government to come up with the truth” said Majhi and Bahinipati in a joint press release here.

They accused the government of using the police administration against the tribals to  suppress their agitations against arbitrary industrialisation. The state government, they said, was acting as an agent of industrialists and targeting its own citizens living in the remote forest areas.
