Bhubaneswar, Jan 5:
Former Councillor of Deogarh Municipality Dharmendra Debata – arrested on charges of pelting eggs and tomatoes on the then Health & Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak’s car during the latter’s visit to Odisha’s Sambalpur last year – today joined the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a month ahead of the panchayat elections in the state.
Debata along with 665 district unit Congress workers joined the BJD during a formal function at Naveen Niwas here this morning.
“I am glad that more than 700 leaders and workers of the Congress party from Deogarh assembly constituency have joined the Biju Janata Dal today. This will strengthen our party,” BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik said.
The leaders said that they are inspired by the ideology of legendary leader Biju Patnaik which prompted them to join the regional party.
“I will take the BJD in the path of growth. We will make Deogarh the No 1 district in the state,” Dharmendra Debata said.
Notably last year on this day, Debata along with his supporters had pelted eggs and tomatoes on Nayak’s convoy near Kurudi while he was going to Deogarh after completing an official tour of Sambalpur district.
With today’s massive induction, the party expects to strengthen its support base in the district.
