Bhubaneswar, Dec 27:
The Congress and the BJP on Friday came out all guns blazing against Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik’s descition of the former as ‘corrupt’ and the latter as ‘communal during his address to party workers on the occasion of the ruling party’s 17th foundation day celebrations on Thursday.
While the Congress called Patnaik’s branding it ‘corrupt’ as a case of ‘the devil quoting the scripture’, the saffron party taunted the chief minister wondering how he had no qualms whatsoever about having an alliance with a ‘communal’ party for 11 long years from 1998 to 2009.
“It is a case of the devil quoting from the scriptures. If the Chief Minister is really ‘Mr Clean’, why does not he hand over the investigation of the mining scam to the CBI immediately and take action against the offenders? Why is he hiding behind the vigilance inquiry, which has made no progress and has failed to nab the culprits?” Congress media cell chairman Narasingh Mishra asked at a press conference here on Friday.
The senior Congress leader also ridiculed the BJD government for its ‘hollow’ claims two years ago about constituting a ‘string’ Lokayukta in the state ‘within three months’.
“The chief minister had said in December 2011 that the government would constitute a strong Lokayukta in the state within three months. But, the three month deadline, it seems, is not over even two years since the announcement,” Mishra said mockingly.
“Forget Lokayukta, it has even failed to appoint a Lokpal in the state for the last 11 months,” said Mishra adding that the government was scared of Lokayukta as it would expose the misdeeds committed in last 14 years.
Raking up the land grabbing for Vedanta University in Puri, he said the chief minister should resign from the post as the Lokpal, in its special report, had said the competent authority that is chief minister is ignorant of law. “We have a government, which rubbishes the judgment of High Court and Lokpal and yet claims it is clean,” said the Congress leader.
BJP state unit president KV Singhdeo also did not mince words while training his guns on the BJD supremo.
“We were not communal when Naveen was in alliance with us for 11 years from 1998 to 2009. It was only after the alliance broke that we suddenly became communal,” Singhdeo said at a press conference here on Friday.
