Sambalpur, Feb 14:
In a happy ending, Colonel A N Singh married his Manipuri lady love a day before Valentine’s Day at Mandhata Baba Shiva temple near Maneswar on the outskirts of western Odisha town of Sambalpur.
Colonel A N Singh (54) and Shanta Kumari (49) took the marital vows as per the Hindu rituals here yesterday.
The officer is said to have succumbed to pressure of losing job and ignominy forcing him to tie the knot with the woman.
Kumari, an unmarried woman from Manipur, had earlier filed a case with the Sambalpur police station of alleged sexual torture and cheating against Colonel A N Singh of the Indian Army currently posted at the NCC group headquarters in Sambalpur as administrative officer.
The woman, an insurance agent, had said that the Colonel was a native of their village near Imphal. After his wife’s death, they had developed close relationship since 2013. In 2015, the Colonel had promised her marriage and established physical relationship with her.
However, he reneged from his promise and refused to marry her. Later, he was transferred to Sambalpur. In her last ditch efforts to get her love back, she followed him here. On arriving at Sambalpur on January 25, she went to the Colonel and had been staying at the Officer’s Mess. But, she had to leave the place after she was allegedly beaten up and tortured by the Colonel’s elder sister.
Distressed, she had approached the Sambalpur SP Akhilesh Singh for justice and a case had been registered in the Mahila police station.
Notably, the Colonel has two children from previous marriage, one of whom is studying abroad.
