Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday complimented Odisha police on the arrest of top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda.
Making a formal announcement about Panda’s arrest in the Assembly, Patnaik said the state police, particularly its intelligence wing, deserves all praise for plotting the arrest of the dreaded Maoist leader.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate the Berhampur police and particularly the intelligence wing for the the success in the arrest of Panda,” the Chief Minister said.
He also appealed to the Maoists to return to the mainstream.
“The police officers responsible for Panda’s arrest will be suitably rewarded,” he said.
Listing the various acts of violence allegedly perpetrated by Panda, the Chief Minister said he was responsible for the killing of at least 25 policemen and 34 persons.
Among the major cases of violence in which he was involved were the attack on the G Udaygiri jail in 2006 that left two policemen dead, the raid on the Nayagarh armoury the same year that left 14 policemen dead, the killing of Hindu leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others in 2008 which led to large scale attacks on Christians laeving 34 dead and the abduction of two Italian tourists in March 2012, the Chief Minister said.
