Classs VII student drowns in Ib river in Odisha’s Sundargarh

Barely four days after four students of Ravenshaw University in Cuttack drowned in the Mahanadi while bathing, a 13-year-old boy drowned and another was rescued from Ib river at Dangaghat under Town police station in Odisha’s Sundargarh district this afternoon.


The deceased has been identified as Musaraff Raja (13), a resident of Main Road, Sundargarh. He was a Class VII student of Sundargarh Public School.

The mishap happened when Musaraff and one of his friends were taking bath in the river.

At around 1.30 pm, the duo which had gone to take a bath got trapped in the current and drowned in the river. Some locals came to their rescue after seeing them drowning. While one minor was rescued, the other could not be traced. Fire tenders later fished out the body of Musaraff after around two hours of search, police said.

“The body of one boy, who had drowned in the river, has been recovered. We have sent the body for post mortem. We are now investigating the case,” said PK Jena, IIC, Town police station, Sundargarh.

A case of unnatural death was registered.
