Union Culture Minister Chandresh Kumar Katoch today confirmed her ministry has forwarded the recommendation of a Linguistic Committee of Kendriya Sahitya Akademi to the Union Cabinet for according the coveted classical tag to Odia language.
“The Ministry of Culture has recommended the matter to the Union Cabinet for sanction. I hope Odia will be declared as classical language in a month’s time,” she said amid loud applause at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the beautification project at the world-famous Sun Temple at Konark.
After thorough examination of documents and materials presented in support of the longstanding demand of Odisha, the Linguistic Committee on July 13 had recommended classical tag for Odia language.
With the classical tag, Odia would join the exclusive club of classical languages represented so far by only five Indian languages – Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam.
