Bhubaneswar, Feb 7:
Continuing in its winning streak in municipal elections, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has swept the Baripada Municipality and maintained its pre-eminent position in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC).
The results of the elections to the two municipal bodies, which took place on Thursday, were announced on Monday.
The party won an overwhelming 21 out of the 28 wards in Baripada and 36 out of the 59 wards in Cuttack.
The Congress, the major opposition party in the state, has been relegated to a distant second winning just nine wards in the CMC polls. Even Independents have done better, emerging triumphant in 10 wards. The BJP finished a poor third with just four wards in the bag.
In Baripada, however, the Congress drew a blank while the saffron party had a consolation victory in one ward. As many as six wards were won by Independents.
