City NGO conducts mass marriage in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, Feb 1:

Prayas, a city-based social organization, organized a mass marriage at Ram Mandir in the Odisha capital today.

Marriage ceremony of 25 couples was solemnized in the presence of eminent personalities.

The marriage ceremony was joined by the local people, volunteers, relatives and friends of brides and grooms who danced in the marriage procession.

The grooms came in separate cars.

The organisers had arranged 25 mandaps for the mass marriage ceremony. As some couples had no family support, the activists and some noted personalities performed the rituals as their parents.

Brahmins from Puri were invited to conduct the marriage rituals. Besides, saints of Khandagiri attended the ceremony and blessed the newly wed couples.

Former chief minister and senior Congress leader JB Patnaik, former minister and BJP leader Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, former minister Panchanan Kanungo, VHP leader Gopal Mohapatra, former diplomat Abasar Beuria and several distinguished personalities of the city attended the ceremony.

Some organisations like Marwari Mahila Manch, Xavier International School and Ruchi Masala presented household articles to the couples.

Prayas chairman and senior lawyer Bana Mohanty said the organization had received applications for 36 marriages of which 25 marriages was finalised.

“Before the marriage, we had scrutinized the applications of the bride and the bridegroom and conducted their blood group test,” he added.
