CBI officials today conducted simultaneous raids at 18 places in Odisha, New Delhi and Mumbai in connection with the mega chit fund scam in the state.
Among the places raided were the house of Rajya Sabha MP Pyari Mohan Mohapatra in Shahid Nagar here and in New Delhi, a CBI official said in New Delhi.
Also raided were the residence of Mohapatra’s personal assistant (PA) AJ Thomas at Expo Tower in Nandankanan area here, the house of land broker Subhankar Nayak at Chandra Apartments in Kharvela Nagar and the residences of two retired IAS officers, one of them being ex Sports secretary Suresh Patnaik, here, sources in the agency said.
Subhankar Nayak later appeared at the CBI office for questioning. Several incriminating documents were seized during the raids at his residence today, CBI sources said. He was an influence peddler and acted as the middleman between Seashore and top bureaucrats, the sources said.
The residences of former chairman of APICOL Balakrushna Rath here and in Titlagarh and Shubham Ispat in Rourkela were also raided by the CBI today.
Raids are also being conducted at the residence of a former commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and a senior official of an insurance company in the Millennium City. The identities of the two, however, are not yet clear. The house of a relative of Seashore CMD Prashant Dash in Shikharpur is also being raided, sources said.
Besides, the houses and offices of several directors of the Seashore Group, senior government officials and some political leaders are also being raided, CBI sources said.
According to sources in the CBI, the Central investigation team is raiding several places in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Titlagarh and Rourkela. The simultaneous raids, being carried out by 10 teams of CBI, began at about 9.30 AM.
