Medical science, making rapid strides today, has been enriched because of the contribution of ancient Indian physicians like Charaka and Sushruta, Prof Omkarnath Mohanty, former Vice-Chancellor of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), said.

Students taking the ‘Hippocratic oath’, widely believed to be written by Hippocrates who is often regarded as the father of western medicine, while being inducted into a course in medical science, should do the same in the name of Charaka and Sushruta, he suggested while addressing the oath taking ceremony of the 7th batch of MBBS students at the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital here on Friday.

Pointing out that there was a need for creativity in every sphere of life, Prof Mohanty said it was required more in the medical profession while stressing the need for coordination between a whole gamut of sciences.

The medical superintendent of Sum Hospital, Dr PK Mohanty and Prof Kiran Dukhu led the freshers in oath taking.

Eminent gynaecologist Dr Sarojini Mohanty, who was the chief speaker on the occasion, urged the students to prepare to be doctors while inculcating an attitude of service to the people.

“As doctors, we must realize that we are serving God by treating our patients,” she said while urging the students to be sensitive about issues like sex-determination tests and female foeticide.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof DK Ray, Medical Director of IMS and Sum Hospital, said the hospital, within a span of seven years, had attained great success.

“The hospital had started superspeciality service in several departments five years ago which other medical colleges were starting now,” he said.

The deputy medical superintendent of the hospital Dr BK Pati proposed the vote of thanks.
