Local police in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district today arrested the boatman of the ill-fated boat that capsized at Chandipal Ghat while on its way to a Shaivite shrine on Monday evening claiming six lives.
Bhuban police today arrested the boatman Bauribandhu Behera from near Chandipal who had gone into hiding since the incident.
Police had lodged a complaint against Behera under section 280 and 504A of IPC. He was forwarded to court later in the day.
It may be recalled around 30-35 persons from Surapratappur village were travelling in a country boat to celebrate Mahashivratri at Daudeswar’s shrine in Gondia block. However, the boat capsized in the Brahmani river at Chandipal Ghat under Bhuban block minutes after steering off the bank. Six persons of the village were missing after the boat tragedy which took place on Monday evening.
Teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire brigade were engaged in the search operation. Following frantic efforts, six bodies were fished out in an operation spanning over three days.
On the other hand, Revenue Divisional Commissioner (North) NBS Rajput began probe into the boat tragedy tomorrow. Rajput along with District Collector Roopa Roshan Sahoo and district administration officials visited Surapratappur village and advised the villagers to take road transport over boat rides to reach their destinations.
