New Delhi, Jan 27:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed a status report on the ongoing investigation into the allocation of the Talabira II and III coal blocks in Sundargarh district of Odisha to Hindalco, an Aditya Birla Group company.
The report, filed in a sealed cover before special judge Bharat Parashar, records the statements of various people, including former Prime Mminister Manmohan Singh and Kumarmangalam Birla, head of the Aditya Birla Group, who were questioned by the CBI recently.
The agency sought two more weeks more to complete its probe and requested court to not open the sealed cover till the investigation is complete in the case.
The court granted more time to probe the case and posted the next hearing in the case for February 19.
On December 16, the court had directed CBI to record the statement of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was then holding coal ministry portfolio, and refused to accept the closure report filed by the agency earlier.
The court also ordered CBI to conduct further investigation in the case. The CBI had booked Birla, former coal secretary P.C. Parakh, and others on charges of criminal conspiracy and corruption in the coal blocks’ allocation, in October 2013.
But the probe agency filed a closure report in the case Aug 28, 2014 saying: “The evidence collected during investigations did not substantiate the allegations levelled against the people named in the FIR (first information report).”
