The court of Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM), here today allowed the Odisha Crime Branch police to take Sarat Patra, close aide of self-styled godman Sarathi Baba alias Sarathi Baba, on a three-day remand for further interrogation.
The Crime Branch police, after producing Patra in the SDJM court amid tight security in the afternoon, pleaded the court to take him on remand for further interrogation to which the court allowed it to take the accused on three-day remand.
Patra was summoned by the Crime Branch sleuths for interrogation yesterday. Following hours of grilling, he was arrested.
Based on the statement of a woman victim, Patra was arrested under Sec 420, 506 and 120(b). He used to allegedly force women to have physical relationship with Sarathi Baba.
The Crime Branch is hopeful of eliciting vital information from Patra as he was looking after the management and financial transaction of the Sarathi Baba ashram.
A Mathematics teacher at Mahanga Birbhadreswar High School, Patra was placed under suspension by the School and Mass Education department on August 13 on charges of neglecting his duty.
Among the closest associates and followers of Sarathi Baba, Patra was the person who held a press meet in Bhubaneswar in defence of the Baba after news broke about his escapades in Hyderabad and said that the Baba’s followers would take appropriate action against the media houses for airing ‘false reports’ against their guru.
