Cuttack, Sep 4:
With the three-day remand of the controversial self-styled godman Surendranath Mishra alias Sura Baba and his two sons ending today, the Odisha Crime Branch police are likely to appeal the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) here to take the trio on a five-day remand for further interrogation.
Earlier on Tuesday (Sep 1), the Crime Branch police had petitioned the court to take them on a five-day remand. However, the court granted a three-day remand.
On the other hand, the probe agency has traced the bank deposit details and cash amounting to nearly Rs 2.40 crore and Rs 25 lakh respectively from the ashram yesterday based on the information ferreted out by the trio—Surendranath Mishra, Trilochan and Biranchi Narayan—during the course of interrogation.
A Crime Branch team dispatched to the Trahi Achyuta ashram at Jhinti Sasan yesterday seized seven accounts in the name of the Baba, his wife, two sons and their wives and the Ttrahi Achyuta Trust totalling deposits of Rs 2.40 crore, ADG Bijay Kumar Sharma said.
The agency would seek further remand of the trio to investigate the financial transactions and money trail.
Notably, they were initially detained by commissionerate police in the wee hours on Monday on the basis of an FIR lodged by activist Jayanta Kumar Bhoi at the Balipatna police station late on Sunday night. They were formally arrested at 10.30 am on Monday after being interrogated by a three-member team led by Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi for over five hours.
