Bhubaneswar, Sep 7:
The Bhubaneswar junior magistrate first class (JMFC) today allowed the Odisha Crime Branch to take Trilochan Mishra, elder son of disgraced godman Sura Baba alias Surendra Mishra, on a three-day remand for interrogation in connection with the extensive financial dealings of Trahi Achuyta Ashram Trust while sending Sura Baba and his other son – Biranchi Narayan – to judicial custody.
At the end of their second three-day remand period, Sura Baba and his two sons were produced at the residence of the Bhubaneswar JMFC this evening on security grounds as a large crowd had gathered outside the court premises.
Crime Branch had sought a remand only for Trilochan Mishra since he used to look after the financial transactions and run the myriad business ventures of the Baba and the Trust headed by him, agency sources said.
Sura Baba and Biranchi were sent to Jharapada jail here after being produced before the JMFC. Both of them have been grilled extensively by Crime Branch sleuths during their two, back-to-back remands, each lasting three days.
Meanwhile, Crime Branch sleuths have stumbled on more evidence about the immense wealth that Sura Baba had accumulated through contributions from devotees and his numerous business transcations.
“After scrutinising the records seized from the ashram, we found that Sura Baba has acquired land in Berhampur, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Baliapal, Baleswar, Baripada and Rourkela. The documents seized also suggest that his annual income was in the region of Rs 3-4 crore, though he never filed any income tax (IT) return,” a Crime Branch official told OST.
During the interrogation of the Baba in the presence of his chartered accountant and an Ashram Trustee, the Crime Branch also located another locker belonging to the Baba in an SBI branch in Bbhubaneswar, the official said.
