Bhubaneswar, Dec 27:
The state government has decided to provide bonus to the paddy farmers.
However, there was no official briefing on the outcome of the meeting due to enforcement of model code of conduct for the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls scheduled on January 8.
Sources said that the state government has planned to provide bonus to the tune of Rs 100-150 per quintal to the farmers.
However, the government would take a final decision on the quantum of bonus after the Agriculture minister submits a report on the feasibility of implementing the decision.
The decision has come in the wake of the meeting in this regard between a delegation of ruling BJD MLAs of western Odisha and senior ministers including Panchayati Raj minister Kalpataru Das, Finance minister Prasanna Acharya, Cooperation minister Bikram Keshari Arukh with chief minister Naveen Patnaik and higher officials last week.
They also said that the millers are unwilling to procure the paddy from the mandis citing the colour of the paddy which was faded due to cyclone Phailin and heavy rains in Western Odisha in October this year.
Alleging that some millers during procurement have deducted 5 kg of paddy per quintal, the leaders cautioned the government to take immediate action or face the wrath of the farmers in the ensuing Assembly elections.
The Cabinet also decided to regularize the services of Group D contract employees working in different departments for over six years.
